UN CLIMATE CHANGE CONFERENCE 2021

COP26 was hosted in Glasgow, Scotland back in November 2021, and here's what we know.

Climate change is everyone’s responsibility and despite mixed views about the way planet earth is heading, the COP26 summit brings together country leaders to accelerate action towards the goals of the Paris Agreement and the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change.

Despite many hours of frantic negotiations, the UN Climate Change Conference (COP26 summit) unites the world on climate change whereby all countries agree on doing their part in a concerted effort to tackle climate change and limiting the rise in global temperature to 1.5 degrees Celsius by 2030.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • 153 countries have put forward new or updated emissions targets which cover around 80% of the world’s greenhouse gasses. As a result of these commitments, the UN projects that greenhouse gasses will be around 5 billion tonnes lower by 2030. This is equivalent to more than 10 years of current UK emissions.
    • To reach the global temperature of 1.5 degrees Celsius countries need to deliver on their commitments. This means phasing down coal power, halting and reversing deforestation, reducing methane gasses, and speeding up the acceleration of switching to electric vehicles.
    • 190 countries have now agreed to phase down coal power with the global pipeline for new coal plants falling by 76%.
    • 91% of the world’s forests are covered by a pledge to end deforestation by 2030. In addition, billions have been allocated to protect and restore ecosystems to reduce the annual net greenhouse emissions by more than 7 gigatonnes by 2030.

SO HOW CAN YOU DO YOUR BIT

    • Where possible provide your employees with the option of remote working. This ultimately reduces the reliance on employees’ transportation to get to and from work.
    • Minimise travel to and from sites and if possible opt for virtual meetings or video conferencing.
    • Opt for greener modes of travel such as walking or using the train.
    • Use renewable forms of energy to reduce reliance on fossil fuels.
    • Switch towards digitalisation and reduce the reliance on paper-based storing.
    • Recycle materials as much as possible.

HOW KEYBOARD KNIGHTS ARE REDUCING OUR CARBON FOOTPRINT

    • At Keyboard Knights we predominately work remotely utilising video conferencing services.
    • We have onboarded local Operatives across Europe (including the UK), Asia, Australia, and North America allowing businesses and MSPs to utilise local IT resources rather than traveling hundreds or thousands of miles to the client site. Using our Smart Hands (UK) or Smart Hands Plus (international) service, businesses are significantly reducing their costs and carbon footprint.
